Maldives Surf Seasons
From April until October
This is the best time of the year to plan a surfing trip to the Maldives as the Monsons blow towards the southest quadrant.
During April, May and June the swell is regular and the waves height is approx. 4ft to 6ft (the chances of not being able to surf during these months, are close to none). The wind if present in the morning, blows lightly on-shore as it quites down or it can switch to 180° becoming off-shore. We do warn our clients to becareful as strong current will be created with the change of tide.
The temperature of the water remains concistent throughout the year at about 28°c. The outside temperature can vary from 28°c to 32°c, remember that we are entering humid season so called "rain season", therefore it will seem hotter ( as you will notice when stepping off the plane...). The weather is clear-variable, as you know the Maldives are situated in the Indian Ocean therefore don't be surprised if all of the sudden a few rainy periods will start. Take this time to get some rest...remember that for the habitants of the Maldives rain is the only sure thing they have (a thundershower usually lasts from 10 min to 1 hr max).
During July and August the swell is clearly more concistent. The waves can reach heights of about 9ft mt. The wind is generally off-shore and at times can be so crisp to brush away the crest of the wave creating a remarkable scenario. If you are looking for a thrilling experience this is definatelly the time to go! The weather overall is variable, therefore you could be having a great sunny vacation as you may encounter a few rainy periods.
During September and October the swell changes dimension effecting the height of the waves which will be of about 3ft to 6ft high. We are now entering "dry season", and if you are able to book time off during this period, the Malldives offer all of their beauty when it comes to Surfing. The spots are not as crowded, the weather is not as humid and the sky is clear.
From November to March...
During mid November to the beginning of March we are in full "Dry season". The Monsons blow from the northwest quadrant, making it the ideal tourist season as the weather is dry and the sun is hot.
At this time the swell is less frequent, you may risk to have to wait a few days for that perfect wave, spending time snorkelling on the coral reef or swimming for hours in the lagoon in the company of your better half!
